Postdoctoral positions in Paris, 2012-2013

Located at the recently inaugurated Maison des Sciences de l’Homme in Paris’s new Latin Quarter, the Interdisciplinary Chair in Anthropology and Global Health (“I.Ch.An.G.He”) of the College of Global Studies examines key issues in global health at the crossroads of biomedical and social science. Our era has seen both spectacular advances in the biosciences, even as dramatic health inequalities have come to light. Molecular biology and the information sciences have provided new tools for mapping health and disease across the globe. I.Ch.An.G.He will explore new perspectives on the human and the social through the prism of genetic, molecular and epidemiological mapping, aiming to develop what we tentatively call a ‘bioscience of society’. The explosive growth of the biosciences has already drawn anthropological scrutiny. Clinics, laboratories, global health projects have provided ethnographic fieldsites. This biopolitical terrain has allowed anthropologists to decrypt the interpenetration of the biological and the social and the new forms of power that coalesce through the government of life itself. This anthropology has called into question some of the truths of biomedicine as it is practiced today: the universality of the human body, life itself as the ultimate arbiter of the ethical, the moral irreproachability of humanitarian action, the interiority of the subject. IChAnGHe’s field of enquiry will draw on, interrogate, and further the emerging biosicences of society and the anthropology of the bioscences. The Chair is held by Vinh-Kim Nguyen, a Canadian-trained anthropologist and physician who has worked extensively in HIV medicine and global health and is also a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Montreal. The FMSH and Paris offer an unparalleled opportunity to build contacts and indeed an intellectual community around interdisciplinary concerns. The Maison des Sciences de l’Homme houses a research library as well as France’s graduate school of social science (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales).

The Chair is currently seeking applications for postdoctoral research positions through the Fernand Braudel International Fellowships for Experienced Researchers program. Applicants must have defended by 30 September 2012. Successful applicants would receive a 9 month research stipend of 2.000€ monthly (non-taxable) as well as return air tickets to Paris. Applications are encouraged from candidates with PhDs in the social, basic or information sciences who seek to broaden their intellectual horizons beyond their discipline of origin within the broad scope of the Chair’s programme. It is expected that their research project will involve a significant new “angle” or cross over into another disciplinary perspective from their doctoral research. French is not a requirement, as both the College and the Chair function in English and French.
