2011 ROY PORTER STUDENT ESSAY PRIZE COMPETITION.

Rules and Entry Form

The Society for the Social History of Medicine invites submissions to its 2011 Roy Porter Student Essay Prize Competition.

1.         Prize: One prize will be awarded for the best original, unpublished essay in the social history of medicine in this competition. The winner will be awarded £500.00. The winning entry may also be published in the journal, Social History of Medicine, subject to the usual editorial procedures, including double blind refereeing.

2.         Eligible Candidates:  Students: undergraduate or postgraduate, part-time or full-time.

·       All candidates must be members of the Society for the Social History of Medicine on the date of submission. A membership form is available on the SSHM’s website http://www.sshm.org. Alternatively, please contact the Membership Secretary of the SSHM. (The membership requirement may be waived for residents of developing countries as listed on the OUP website.  Please contact the Membership Secretary.)

·       The essay competition is only for students registered as of the deadline for submission of entries and for those students whose postgraduate degree (e.g. Masters, PhD, DPhil) ‘date of completion’ occurred in 2011.

·       Candidates who are uncertain as to whether they are eligible to enter the competition should contact the Secretary before preparing their entry.

3          Essays must be:

·       Unpublished and not submitted to any other competition at the same time

·       Written in English

·       Anonymous (Authors must identify themselves only on a detachable cover sheet)

·       5,000-8,000 words in length (including footnotes).

·       In conformity with the bibliographic conventions of Social History of Medicine, available at http://www.sshm.org.

NOTE: The same essay cannot be submitted more than once, and entries from previous years will not be accepted.

4          Assessment Panel: The panel chaired by the Chair of the Society for the Social History of Medicine, consists of the Society's Representative on the Editorial Board, one of the Editors of Social History of Medicine, and another member of the Executive Council of the Society for the Social History of Medicine, with the assistance of other members of the editorial board.

5          To enter:  Please send an electronic version of the essay and a short CV to the SSHM Membership Secretary, Dr Catherine Cox, as email attachments (email address: Catherine.cox@ucd.ie). Please send a hard copy of the completed form (see below) via mail to Dr Catherine Cox, School of History and Archives, John Henry Newman Building, Belfield, Dublin 4, Ireland. The deadline for mailing entries is 1 February 2012.  All entries must be emailed on or before the deadline date.

Please Note: The announcement of prizewinners will be made at the SSHM AGM held during the Society’s Annual Conference.

NOTES     -       The Editors of Social History of Medicine reserve the right to consider any of the entries for publication, subject to normal refereeing procedures.

-   Members of the Executive Committee of the SSHM or the Editorial Board of Social History of Medicine may not enter either competition, even if otherwise eligible.

-   The prize will not be awarded if the Assessment Panel considers that none of the essays reaches an acceptable standard.

Elderhostel K. Patricia Cross $5,000 Doctoral Research Grant - Applications due May 2

Elderhostel is accepting applications for the Elderhostel K. Patricia Cross Doctoral Research Grant. This grant is open to U.S. and international students whose doctoral research focuses on lifelong and/or later-life learning. Elderhostel is the new program name of Elderhostel, Inc., the not-for-profit world leader in lifelong learning.

Elderhostel K. Patricia Cross Doctoral Research Grant

Elderhostel invites applications from doctoral candidates researching lifelong or later-life learning for the Elderhostel K. Patricia Cross Doctoral Research Grant. This $5,000 grant is awarded annually to a student in various disciplines including, but not limited to, psychology, education, gerontology, cognitive studies, neuroscience, leisure studies, aging and social work. Because the selection committee requires an abstract and description of your current research, you must already be engaged in your dissertation research. International graduate students welcome to apply.

The application deadline is Monday, May 2, 2011. Please be sure to have all application material submitted by 11:59pm Eastern Time, including your CV/resume, 2-3 page abstract and at least one of your recommendations.

The Elderhostel K. Patricia Cross Doctoral Research Grant recipient will be determined by a selection committee consisting of professors, practitioners and other leaders in the field of lifelong learning. The recipient will be announced in July 2011.

2011-12 IICAS Graduate Student Travel Grants

Annually, the Institute for International, Comparative, and Area Studies (IICAS) at UC San Diego awards grants to graduate students for dissertation research travel.

IICAS grants are directed primarily to students in the social sciences and humanities. Supported research should be about other societies rather than simply conducted in other societies. Applications from fields outside the social sciences and humanities may be eligible if they deal with global issues, cross-national comparisons, or research on particular societies and also have a substantial human or societal dimension. (Implications for public policy should be made explicit.)

CILAS 2010 Grant Competition

The Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies is pleased to announce the 2010 CILAS Grant Competition. Awards range from academic year and summer language fellowships to travel grants for pre-dissertation research. A brief description of each grant can be found below. More detailed information and application instructions are available on the CILAS website.

AY-FLAS is an award offered to students that wish to improve their language skills in Brazilian Portuguese, Zapotec, Aymara, Mixtec or advanced Spanish at the San Diego Consortium (UCSD/SDSU). The award pays resident or non-resident fees, plus a $15,000 stipend to be paid in ten $1,500 installments throughout the academic year. Eligibility: All graduate students who are accepted for enrollment or who are enrolled in a program that requires modern foreign language training.

Summer Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship:
This fellowship is for students who wish to enroll in intensive language programs at the beginning, intermediate, or advanced level. S-FLAS fellowships are broken down into two awards. The first award is a stipend in the amount of $2500. This can be used for any expenses incurred during the language program. The second award is paid directly to the sponsoring institution which covers tuition. This award is up to $4,000. Eligibility: All graduate students who are accepted for enrollment or who are enrolled in a program that requires modern foreign language training.

Tinker Pre-Dissertation Research Travel Grant:
The Tinker Pre-Dissertation Travel Grant awards are for pre-dissertation field research for travel outside the United States (i.e. to Spain, Portugal, Brazil or Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America), for a minimum of 4 weeks and a maximum of 4 months between June 2010 and February 2011. Awards range from $500 to $1,500.

Eligibility:
All UCSD graduate students conducting pre-dissertation research.

There will be an informational session on Friday, February 5 in the Institute of the Americas Complex.
